Stipple Fill

Seeded dots distributed according to source density.

Stipple replaces the regular halftone grid with image-weighted point placement. Dark areas attract more and larger marks, while highlights remain open. The stable internal seed makes the same artwork and parameters repeatable.

Controls

  • Thickness controls dot size.
  • Spacing controls target density and distance between points.
  • Angle has little visible effect when Organic is zero.
  • Organic changes dot irregularity and local placement character.

Start with Thickness 5–7 and Spacing 12–18. Lower Spacing only when you genuinely need finer detail.

Color

Static mode creates a traditional single-color stipple. Dynamic Color samples the source at each dot, producing pointillist color.

Performance

Stipple can generate thousands of Illustrator paths. Very small Spacing values increase rendering time, file size, selection complexity, and Expand Appearance cost. Work at a moderate setting, then refine only for the final version.

Stipple is a strong choice for portraits, botanical work, engraving, and images with a clean silhouette.
