Tips & Best Practices

Build cleaner results, keep Illustrator responsive, and preserve editability.

Start with Structure, Then Add Detail

Begin with moderate Spacing and Organic at 0. Establish the right fill, direction, density, and color first. Lower Spacing or raise Organic only after the basic construction works.

Balance Thickness and Spacing

If marks merge into a dark mass, increase Spacing before reducing every other setting. If the result is too weak, increase Thickness or reduce Spacing. These two controls define most of the visual density.

Use the Right Source Bounds

Circular, Spiral, String Art, and other radial fills depend on the visible bounds. Crop, mask, or group the source so its center and proportions match the intended composition.

Use Appearance Order Deliberately

Place source-shaping effects below Linestra. Place global result styling above it. If you cannot tell which stage an entry affects, toggle the Linestra eye icon and inspect the stack.

Choose Static or Dynamic Color Early

Static color is cleaner for engraving, technical work, plotting, and one-color production. Dynamic Color is strongest for Low-Poly, Contour, colorful Halftone, and illustrative line work.

Keep Complex Fills Manageable

Stipple, Dither, Low-Poly, Wireframe, Fractal, String Art, and ASCII can create large appearances.

  • Explore with larger Spacing.
  • Avoid repeatedly expanding test versions.
  • Hide unrelated complex layers while working.
  • Save before dense expansion.
  • Use a simplified source when microscopic detail is not needed.

Use Numeric Fields for Consistency

Type values when several objects must share a visual system. Apply the same Thickness, Spacing, Angle, and Organic settings, then vary only the fill or color.

Build Layered Effects with Duplicates

For cross-hatching or mixed styles, duplicate the source and apply a separate Linestra effect to each copy. For example, combine Linear at 45° with another copy at −45°. This is easier to control than stacking multiple expensive Linestra effects on one appearance.

Preserve a Live Master

Never make the only copy of important artwork an expanded copy. Keep source art and effects live in a master document, then expand a duplicate for delivery.

Report Reproducible Problems

Include Illustrator version, operating system, source-art type, fill, parameter values, Dynamic Color state, and—on macOS, if it exists—the log at ~/Library/Logs/VexyLinestra/plugin.log.
